Linux Install-Fest
The Details
- When: Saturday, Sept. 22, 9 am–10 am
- Where: Olin 132
- Who: NWU faculty, staff, and students
- What: MathCS ACM Club and CSIT will install Linux on PC's
Are you an NWU faculty, staff, or student who's heard about Linux
and wants to try it? Just follow these instructions:
- PC's only. If you have a Mac we can point you to Web literature that
would help you but if you have Mac OS X, you've got UNIX on your box
anyway.
- At least 5 Gbs. of hard drive free and at least 128 Mb of RAM.
- Back up your data before bringing it in.
Splitting the hard disk and
installing a second operating system is akin to brain surgery; some
patients die. NWU, its employees, and other members of the Install-Fest
team are not responsible for data lost due to the installation process.
- Run
scandisk and defrag on your hard disk
before bringing in your PC.
- Bring in your computer but not your monitor.
- If you have a password on your BIOS, write it on a piece of paper and
bring it in. If it's Vista, include your administrator password as well.
- If you bring in a notebook, bring in your power adapter.
- Serious experimenters only. It will take us, all volunteers, a few hours
to install. It would be a shame if you never gave Linux a serious try.
- Since the installation is dependent on the hardware, we cannot guarantee
success.
That's it! Bring your PC in between 9 am and 10 am and we will email you when
we're done.
